Economic Relations
Economic and commercial relations between Switzerland and Norway are close and well established. Bilateral trade in goods amounted to approximately CHF 1.05 billion in 2025 (around NOK 14 billion), with Swiss exports to Norway roughly double Norwegian exports to Switzerland. Switzerland mainly exports machinery, pharmaceutical products, precision instruments, and metal products to Norway. Norwegian exports to Switzerland include metals and metal products, machinery, and fish and agricultural products.
Both countries are founding members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which provides the principal framework for their trade relations. While Norway participates in the EU internal market through the EEA Agreement, Switzerland's relations with the EU rest on bilateral agreements. Further information is available on the EFTA website.
Switzerland has few natural resources, and its economy relies on innovation and a highly skilled workforce. The country invests heavily in research and development, particularly in the pharmaceutical, medtech, and high-tech sectors. Its stable political and economic environment and central location in Europe make it a frequent base for international companies.
